每次跟外國人朋友聊天 他們多少都會想學幾個簡單的東西

How to repair holes on walls 之 好大一個洞

有一天半夢半醒間 覺得發現床邊的牆壁有個洞腳還可以伸進去......

醒來發現真的有個大洞XD

呃 我的腳明明就扭到超嚴重的...怎麼踢破這個洞 一點感覺也沒有 Orz



美國的屋子牆壁真的是有夠爛....不過反正不太重要...也就一直不管他

就這樣過了一年....要搬家了...只好上網研究怎麼補洞XD



哈 似乎比我想像中的簡單很多

之前還想說拿一個 電源開關的那種蓋子貼上去 假裝裝說有一個開關 XD


比較專業的補洞技巧需要買灰泥刀 (putty knife), 灰泥盤(tray), 細沙紙(fine sanding paper), 灰泥 (joint compound, spackle)有的沒的一堆東西~~

哈 這些東西在Home depot 都找得到


結果我在home depot 找到有一種 "細網補丁 metal patch" 使用上非常便利

而且我還問了三四個店員 才問到metal patch 是放在哪XD



metal patch及灰尼的kit組 約$7





量洞的大小 哈





選擇比洞略大的metal patch





貼上metal patch 之後 就不會覺得有洞在那邊










用kit組中的粉紅色灰泥覆蓋在metal patch 上


要塗得很有技巧!! 不然patch的格子網的形狀會露出來

然後還要故意塗得有點亂 才不會有一個很明顯補過的痕跡





塗完了





粉紅色的灰泥會隨著時間開始變成白色 大概要一天的時間 再用砂紙磨一磨




最後一步呢...就是用鞋子踩一踩 把他弄舊

降房東才看不出來那是新的XD

總共花了不到$15....

簡單說 老闆跟其他教授一起接的四年計畫

每一年有一個目標 照實驗室現況 我應該還要撐個兩年才畢業吧:p





話說真的有在作量子電腦的公司

明年usc 會有一台可執行某種單一功能量子電腦 128個位元



哈 聽起來很嚇人 但是其實現在要作出量子電腦還不太可能...

error​ correction 跟物理實作上 還差兩個order...





之前有一個作 量子 ECC 很有名的人Bacon 不幹了 跑去Google 上班XD

然後這個project 要用的ECC 有一項就是 Bacon-Shor code....

哈 我不忍心再騙別人踩火坑了~

我老闆真的很幽默

有一天因為腳踏車的輪胎沒氣，走路去meeting遲到

結果老闆說 "That's why i like to take a train..it has no tires, all steel wheels......"

2. 你有看"Source code"嗎? 火車可是爆炸了十幾次XD





EEB的五樓主要是通訊系統組的教授跟研究生待的



有一次我在五樓坐電梯的時候

聽到一個人的手機鈴聲響了...結果發出摩斯密碼 XD

實在是太炫了 哈 聽不出來是什麼...整個電梯裡面的人都笑了

I gave an one-hour presentation in lab meeting, and thus I did speak English a lot today.

I am supposed to support him.



呼~感想：

1、我覺得Starbucks 玻璃瓶裝的Mocha 還蠻好喝的XD



2、學長有三個朋友來旁聽

其中一個是caltech 的researcher 一直問問題 感覺像是第四個committee...



以後要找認識的人來撐場面，但又不能找這種會挖自己腳的XD



3、我好像可以參加qualification了....xD



是該多認真一點 目標：一天待在office 4+ hours





最近在唸很難的東西，fault tolerant computation,

有時候常想，自己幹嘛找這種東西來唸呀XD

很討厭機率的一些東西，

但是問朋友的話，

"你真的要我想嗎?"

哈

其實大家都很討厭








感覺大家都很忙，都有自己的事情、課業、有的沒的，

但好像大家又都很閒，總想找個理由出來聚聚、吃個飯

或是說，有個吃飯的名目，就可以藉口出來放鬆一下

總有點懷念以前在新竹，三五好友沒事躲在我房間一起看

現在就很不喜歡一個人在家看比賽哩.....

第二年的夏天

呼~ 從開始準備 Screening(基本學科資格考) 到現在 好久沒寫新的網誌



先complain一下這個制度 EE有五個組

com(通訊), 八個科目、九個教授 一對一口試，還包含近十年前學的電磁學=.=

sip, 筆試五科目

ce, 筆試+選擇性口試三科目

ee-physics, 修課平均GPA 3.5



我考com的 實在很不平衡 哈

準備的累得要死，有的教授很會刁難學生=.=

尤其是不會教書的那個，他總是想說這個很簡單、學生應該都會....

還好終於考過了 花了我六個月 xD

本來想用"浪費" 不過的確是基本能力變強很多，連電磁學都很熟了 Orz



後來跟呂老聊天，原來com這制度是超過三十年的傳統啦 xD

哈 難怪 usc的com 厲害!







六月了，免不了要感傷一下，大多數朋友都畢業、找工作、回台灣、找工作.....

現在要開始新的生活! get to know new people!

現在也很想唸書了，也很想固定出去玩 哈

照自己的調調過生活





最近開始新的研究方向，Fault-tolerant Quantum computation ，一直在唸paper

唸得很煩的時候 總是在想著 "我幹嘛挑這麼難的領域來唸XD"



然後報名了information theory school (一個教學性質的會議) 今年八月在USC

只是它很奇怪，規定要作一個poster，報名表上還要填homepage

害我就寫了一個簡單的個人的homepage 哈 http://www-scf.usc.edu/~laiching/

是有比較像phd了

哈 上面的publication還是 一篇 submitted to IEEE IT, 2007

或者我該改成 under revision, 2009 ....

好消息是去年寫得paper 最近應該等學長畢業 就可以投稿了吧







暑假修了一門課 CSCI570 Algorithm Design

哈 希望可以湊一些CS的學分 去騙個CS的master 的學位:p



看這門課的課本，討論一個問題 我就會有個想法怎麼解答

但每次課本都會先解釋一個比較爛的方法 讓我看不太懂

然後課本才再提出better method

我就想 "啊這不就是我剛想的嗎? 幹嘛不直接教這個就好了..."

果然這感覺是大學部用的書



現在修課，都會把學到的東西馬上聯想到研究上，可不可以用，終於有像點phd了







以後要一週出去晃一個地方，

雖然自己去過的地方已經算多的了，不過我的list上還是很滿

哈 所以我決定要把附近一天可以玩完的行程都玩過!



另外就是該學習單獨旅遊的樣子，哈

比如說我排了一天去逛一個公園 或是一條trail,

如果沒有人跟我去 我就自己去吧!! 美其名， 我是去場勘 XD

有時候真的很想要曬太陽

最近老闆新收了一個伊朗女生，叫Sepideh，跟她聊天時她提到今年暑假有去USC參加Information

Theory的workshop~ 有印象嗎 XD

Moving Done! Next

I have a flat tire so i walked my bike to the bike shop on the intersection of 29th st and Vermont.
However, the shop doesnt buy used bikes. Thus i walked my bike to UV.
Finally, i sold my bicycle at UV for $25(original price is $65 plus tax).......Orz
I tought i have lose about 3 pounds in this process.

My electric fan broke. 一開始變得不太會轉 轉超慢的
我就把它的罩子拆掉 然後 用手幫它轉葉扇 就像電影裡面 有螺旋槳的飛機 啟動前 那個人就會先轉一下

哈 害我想了一下電力馬達，應該是啟動轉矩太小
但是我又忘了怎麼解決這個問題 果然沒多久就掛了 連我的手都轉不動了 XD
之前吸塵器也壞了 拆開之後 也是個馬達的問題 ....
Ha, i dont want to spend any time to figure it out.
I guess this is because there is too much dust in LA.


After my advisro read my draft on Thursday,
he asked me to consider the structure, application, and some problems that can be solved by my method.
Then write a discussion and the paper should be written in the form of paper that is going to be submitted.
This is good. But in fact, i didnt really understand what should be included.
I thought i have written the draft in the form of a paper to be sumbitted.
He also sent my paper to a guy in CalTech who is interested in my research during a talk with my advisor.
So inspiring! ha


My advisor's name is Todd Brun.
When i heard a senior member greeted him: " Hi Todd" in the meeting, it's really strange to me.
I dont dare to say that but "Hello Professor"

The day before yesterday, I dreamed of my advisor =.=

In the dream, he gave me some suggestion and pointed out a improving method about the optimization problem with which I am dealing in the real life.

However, after I woke up, I cannot remember what the method he showed in the dream. XD

Today, I have thought a method to improve the efficiency although I do not know whether my method is the same as what my advisor said in the dream.

Ha, hope that I can finish the problem as soon as possible and begin a new paper.





以前有一次上課坐我旁邊的美國人超屌,

他是左手寫字, 然後他把筆記順時鐘轉九十度, 接著開始直得抄下來

也就是說 他的英文是直的寫!!! 超炫!!

更厲害的是 那門課都是數學.......數學式子也可以直得寫嗎!



最近上了英文課，我又看到左手直行書寫的人，

難怪我用左手寫英文字的時候寫不順，哈 以後要練一下左手直行寫!!

I was asked to revise my master's thesis, which was submitted to IEEE on IT. One reviewer suggested my paper to be accepted, but the other made a 3-pages comment, asking more support materials. He even criticized the usage of my English XD

This is Shark! We went to the San Diego Seaworld in the first weekend of this semester. There are many shows by Shamu, sea lions, whale, dophins, most of which have a similar part-the animal will dampen you! The best part of Seaworld might be the Shipwreck Rapids, because the Journey to Atlantics, kind of a sky and water roller,is under maintenance.



I take one Math course this semester. It is on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, one hour each time. Everyday the professor will assign homework problems =.= The most difficult part is that he speaks so fast and his writing is indiscernible to me. Moreover, the textbook sucks! Ha.. Together with my two meetings with Professor, it is so bothersome. XD



There are so many things to be done! But I was so lazy that I dont want to sort the pictures in San Diego, San Francisco, the dinner in Chinese New Yer

Thanksgiving Meal!

Yuji and I cooked our big Thanksgiving meal. Fried Shrimp、辣子雞丁、菠菜炒牛肉、?菜沙茶豬肉、滷肉&蛋、羅宋 soup and Tea.







Charles, John, and Mike had a great dinner with us. Originally, I want to cook 鳳梨蝦球, but maybe next time, ha.

However, my electrical pot is not big enough that rice is not enough! In fact, I think the meal was not that successful because my habit is different from Yuji's.





After the meal, Dylan broung poker here.

This was my first playing poker in USA!

They also drank a lot of beers, brought by Mike.







I played hair cut!! Ha this is the second time I trim my hair!!

I borrowed a pair of scissors for thining hair from Koko.

It was so funny that I should have trimmed my hair when I was in Taiwan!! However, I cant see the back and i dont know whether i trimmed the hair uniformly. Also, I cut it much shorter than what I expected. Next time I have to wash hair before trimming XD





There came the first big shower in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Unforunately, my cable and internet were idled from one-day rainning =.=

God! I cant believe it! Just one-day rainning!





Most important thing of these weeks is that I got a RA!!

Ha!! And I can get 50% of salary and 12 credits for free!!

My advisor is a good guy. When other member of the Lab asked what project I want to do, my advisor said, "To get money first is more important!" Ha! Probably, I have to burn my life next semester.





By the way my Ginger grows up to about 10 cm high!! ha

Happy Halloween!

This was my first Halloween in America.

There were many people wearing strange costumes on the streets!

It's a pity that we didn't go to the west Hollywood Halloween Carnival. Instead, we visit an activity northeastern part outside campus. When I was about to cross the road, someone asked me to turn my head and I saw the ugly ghost! Ha, it's so funny! They also asked if we were from Taiwan! Later, I took a pic with him. The most common character is the Clown in Batman-The Dark Knight, while there is no Batman all night.







However, we didn't play Pumpkin carving tonight. When I saw the pics of pumpkin carved by Mark, I envied him! I want to play pumpkin carving next year!






By the way, I practiced driving this morning. The accelerator of the coach's car was so loose that I often push too much! In this way he had a reason to blame me!! So motorcycle.

Hope I can pass the driver's exam quickly.

A single day apart seems like three years

My time goes very fast! I mean, what happened two days ago seemed to be very far from now on. I kind of worry about the relationship with people who I dont contact for more than two weeks. I might consider that are we still good friends? I feel strange. However, after talking for a while, I feel like before. Indeed, I know the true relationship.



I went to Lyon Center for the first time. But I was forbidden entering the building or I had to pay $10 because I didn't sign up the waive form on-line. I had no choice but barrow someone eles's uscard.



There are two kinds of squash ball, squash and racquetball

The speed of Racquetball is much faster and the elaticity is bettert than those Squash. Also the room for Racquetball is larger.



I have learned three kinds of squash.

One is for a kind of vegetable, such as Taiwan squash, which is $3.5/EA expensive. The other is for a kind of juice, which tasts bad. Another is the Squash ball.







In UV, Korean BBQ

Originally, i wanted to order 10. Beef and chicken and vegetables, which is equivallent to 6 meals. XD

1 beef 2 beef and vegetables 3 chickens

8 beef and chicken 9 vegetables

Finally, I ordered Kim chi soup or 泡菜豆腐煲, $8.00

which is not as good as 大腸臭臭鍋XD

Ken ordered Special kim chi fried rice, with free soda

The boss gave me a free coke because she said only one drink is strange for two people. Ha.

我的泡菜很多 就問學弟要不要吃

The boss watched and then treated him free kim chi, whihc is worth 50cents.

學弟點的炒飯有雞肉跟牛肉兩種，我挾了他的雞肉來吃

I think the chicken is better than my tofu soup, which has only one piece of beef. =.=

學弟就說 老闆會不會再請我吃一盤肉XD

哈 還不錯 這家老闆有人情味





After that, we went to the Galen center to watch the women's volleyball game, USC vs Stanford.

American are so high that they will dance or do something funny when they are caught by the photographer!

James 搶到兩件t-shirt! He is so lucky!

就丟在他旁滿，讓我跟詠晴賺到USC T-shirt! Because the size is M. ha!

By the way, we are on TV for twice!

But I only have the video taken by myself.

Maybe people in Taiwan can see me on ESPN XD

I try to catch the game by my fs520 in video mode.

However, it's so hard that I felt tired and quitted after 1m30sec XD

First midterms in USC finished

I take my first midterm, Random Process, in Zumberge Hall of Science, which is a very strange building.

At the first glance I felt lost when i got into the buiding.

It's a litte like the Physics Building of NTHU. XD

於是我馬上退出去，然後照著教授建議的門，找到考試的教室XD 哈 我怕遲到



I went to Parkside, which is a buffet on campus, with Fred. The cost is $8, $10 and $12 for morning, noon, and evening, respectively. The beef steak, sweet and sour chicken, and pizza taste delicious. Everything else is bad, especiallly, dessert. All dessert suck! Ice cream, blueberry pie, Brownie. 這個Brownie 一切就碎掉了XD 有夠扯。



After taking three midterms here, I think that exam questions are much easier than what I have taken in NTHU. They emphasize understanding of class materials. Problems hard to prove will not appear in a 80-minute exam. As a result, I feel no pressure anymore!





騎腳踏車回家的時候，在路上等紅綠燈，

突然頭被一種東西滴到......

竟然是松樹的脂...還好不是鳥大便XD

那一瞬間我在心裡罵了美國的烏鴉....

松脂有一種香味 但是超黏的XD

就像用了超強的髮彫.....害我洗了三次頭><

I learn to laugh, even I dont want to laugh.

It's two thirty in the morning, but I cannot fall asleep.





It has been a long time that I feel nervous under the pressure from midterm that is so heavy that my heart is beatting fast and my breath is getting tough. Maybe this is because of the first Midterm I have in USC. However, there are still two days from it! Oh my dear lord!





I kind of look at a stranger in the mirror. What's wrong with me? I don't study hard enough as before, I am not careful as before, I cannot look at the bright side. I kind of lost my confidence and composure, which were built up from diligence and persistence. What I hate the most is that the materials are easy, which I should handle easily.



Now, even the 三杯雞 I cooked is terrible! By the way, I found that not only potato, but also ginger germinates.XD





I have to spend more time studying, which is obvious the thing I am good at and familiar with and is not whimsical and mecurial.





I decided to avoid attendence of the DEN classes in these two weeks. I dont want to make stupid mistakes again as I did in my homeworks.





I learn to laugh, even I dont want to laugh.





P.S. 這時候隔壁的還不睡一直講電話還是什麼的，是怎樣，真的很靠盃，就不要過來怪我在半夜唱歌，都三點半多了...機車

English is important

I worked hard on my homework and I saw the sunrise for the first time. This is because I did not do my homework until the last minute. At the same time, it had rained for the first time since i came to Los Angeles, although it seemed like no rain at all. I hate that I am lazy and not active as I was before. To sum up, I need a regular, not good, habit of studying and sleeping.



In LAB meeting, the professor will talk about what he has done in last week and what he heard in the quantum group meeting of CalTech. This is much different from my impression in Taiwan. I believe I come to a correct place, although I still cannot understand what the professor is talking about, especially his jokes that everyone, except me, is laughing at. I try.



The shopping habit is different from Taiwan. I have to take things out from the basket and put the basket on the ground before I pay. However, I give the basket with things to the cashier directly in Taiwan. By the way, I learn to waste the plastic bags in USA.



I find that I can watch the NBA games of LA Lakers and LA Clipper on TV directly, which is very good news. I hope one day I can go to Staple Center and watch Lakers vs Rocket!



I can cook 蛋包飯, 三杯雞, 牛肉麵 and so on. I find how to make delicious sliced egg with milk! Next time I will show it.

來美國了

終於有空談一下現在的情形，



7/29

海關的人員還蠻機車的，我哥跟我一起，他對我哥說

"he cant take care of himself?"



之後我爸的朋友幫我接機 帶我們去 Little Tokyo

路上還有游民來要錢xd 要是沒開車根本不敢亂走

而且有的區域很明顯 一大堆黑人、老墨



在小東京吃了一家 涮涮鍋 也不錯 大概有十五片肉吧 $5.5 未稅



旅館還不錯 畢竟一個晚上112元xd 他的販賣機 一瓶600cc 的水 1.25

然後只有一條網路線Orz 得輪流用..



幫07學弟接機的學長剛好也是通訊的，聊了一下，一直叫人家幫他介紹女朋友是怎樣xd





7/30

旅館的早餐是 千層派跟馬糞蛋糕 有香蕉跟橘子 飲料是蘋果汁跟柳橙汁還有咖啡

都是隨便拿，就算你沒住在那 跑去拿他應該也不知道xd



一大早T$A(台灣同學會) 問我們要不要辦Bank of America (BOA)的帳號

推薦人可以賺十元 被推薦人可以賺十元 果然是 T$A

而且超機車 他們一起預約 只有一個人幫我們弄

變成一個人四十分鐘 、一個一個等 超久XD



事實證明 後來我帶學弟去辦 直接就可以辦 根本不用等 而且變成我賺十元



美國人超晚上班，我十點前打電話給房東都不接的，

終於到十二點半有一個房東才理我



後來去買了subway 我發現我根本不會點 哈 我在台灣的subway 就不太會點了:P



這兩天都在調時差 根本變成兩段式睡眠XD





7/31 逛了校園，usc真的是相當小，大概四十分鐘可以逛完吧

之後陪學弟去看 西區的房子，離系館最近，但是治安稍差



學弟一開口"aa.. I am a student of .. USC ..aaaa I want to...a"

結果房東就說了 " 你可以說中文的呀!"

於是他房東就是個大陸人



中餐吃了Denny's 漢堡 份量超大 可樂也是無限喝 大概是$7~9

根本吃不完XD



後來再去找房東..看看我就租下來了 哈 之後再弄個照片

這棟住的大部分好像都是留學生，

有一戶 還貼春聯，超屌，哈，害我也想貼一下:p



之後逛了超市，還不錯 離我那邊很近 以後都靠他了XD



8/1 今天麻煩CalTech的學長幫學弟跟我搬行李

後來學長帶我們去跟Tony 學長還有他女朋友一起吃飯

跑去了China Town 好像吃的叫 漢宮大飯店

吃的是港式飲茶… 一盤普通的都是 $2.5

我以前沒吃過 還真不知道要怎麼點XD



回來的時候 坐的是Tony 學長的車 我超冏的

我竟然問他說 " 學長你是買二手車嗎?"

結果他說 " 我是買新車XD" 哈哈



後來回學校弄手續，也成功在學校無線上網!!

圖書館還不錯，24小時，然後插頭都可以用



後來學長約五點打網球，

結果學弟說"快六點了 我得回家了"

哈 這邊現在八點多才會天黑

但是他住的那區是治安比較不好的



後來我一個人走來走去 到了網球場 我竟然找不到入口XD

而且我發現其他的球場也都一樣，旁邊都是用黑布圍起來，

可能是擋風吧、要觀賞就一定要坐在看台上了



自己一個人 還真的不敢亂走 哈

美國人都很大隻，我算是超瘦的，如果一個黑人女生來搶我錢 我應該也會乖乖給他XD

大概美國人 只要瘦的 就算漂亮了XD





今天打電話去申請電，沒想到 打中文 一直忙線中

打英文 一開始的語音叫我選區域

我還真的聽不懂我是要選哪一區
